I found it interesting when you were talking about the change in social acceptability to joke about subjects that were once considered ‘untouchable’ I have often wondered what your stance is on this kind of thing Patrick because I have noted that in a lot of podcasts you are in, you seem to get a bit of stick for being French, most notably from some of your American counterparts LOL. I know that it is all in good humour, and that the people taking the mickey out of you are good friends, but on rare occasion I have almost felt…. perhaps offended isnt the right word… but maybe politely ‘defensive’ on your behalf. I have often wondered if it ever bothers you on any level at all or whether it really is just ‘water off a duck’s back’ as they say…
I don’t know what you are planning for your next ‘… for dummies’ episode Patrick but if it begins with an A then I am clearing my schedule, grabbing a beer and making an evening of it

I really enjoyed the perspectives on the Berlin Wall. Also relations with young Germans and other young Europeans. In much of S.E. Asia for example, young people love Japanese pop culture and have no real relation to (or thoughts about) the Japan of WWII. But there are still some people of the much older generations who have very negative feelings for Japan.
What is really interesting is to contrast this experience of the Wall with that of Tiananmen Square which also turned 20 this year and occurred just a few months beforehand. Both events moments on the threshold of change that went in completely opposite directions.

Ive been to Germany 4 times now… Berlin twice, Munich once and Hamburg once. It is by far and away my favourite country in Europe, the cities are amazing. Berlin in particular stood out for me but what I noticed about all the cities was that they were incredibly clean. For such big, highly populate cities I found this quite incredible but to me it was clear that on an individual level people made a real effort to keep it clean which to me spoke volumes about how much pride they had in their city. It was an absolute wake-up call coming back to the dirty streets of Glasgow in the UK. In terms of (tangible) national pride, I think we the UK could learn alot from the Germans.
