There is an important thing to keep in mind when talking about the torture done by the American Government at places like Guantanimo Bay. The government did not keep it secret because they knew international opinion would be against them. They kept it secret because they knew opinion among American citizens would be against it.
This is, unfortunately, the primary reason the government keeps things secret from us. They know that we would vote them out of office if we knew the truth about the things they do. They tell us as little as possible and even that they spin to be a positive thing no matter how negative it is. They say stupid things like “water boarding is not torture.”
We know it’s stupid, but they election system is set up so that we have to pick between two choices. This last time we had to choose between a power hungry war criminal (can’t be proven) and a weak willed socialist. Bad and Bad. We chose the lesser evil, but at what cost? We’ll see.
Oh, and Captain Kirk was from Iowa, not Utah.
HI Patrick: Just found this podcast and wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed it, but felt compelled to drop you a note regarding active volcanoes.
You’re a bit young, but Mt. St. Helens in Washington state erupted May 18 1980- a massive landslide followed by months of ash clouds. I’ll enclose a link (if it works) to the wiki article regarding the Pacific Ring of Fire,a circle around the Pacific that includes 75% of the world’s active volcanoes.
Within the article is a photo of the St. Helen’s cloud 2 months later.
Fortunately, the prevailing winds blew the ash eastward, toward the high desert country where it’s less populated. That said, Spokane Wa. and smaller towns were affected. Cars couldn’t operate, of course businesses closed and it would be interesting to check the stats on incidents of silicosis popping up about now. As a resident of Portland, Oregon at the time,I can attest–even though we were due west of the volcano — some 5 years later I was still sifting ash from the gutters and brushing it off the shrubs. The ash is so fine, it was nearly impossible to wash it away. A bit like a heavier version of talc powder. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Ring_of_Fire. And speaking of volcanoes, we’re treated to repeating programs on the science channel promising an eruption of the three calderas that sit under Yellowstone National Park. I enjoy the Movielicious also.. Obviously I’m part of that older demographic you guys jokingly refer to from time to time… that’s okay we can take it.

The ash cloud caused me many problems. My parents were stuck in Barcelona and I helped him to find a solution to come home. They did Montpellier-Barcelona by bus after train to Paris and back home in Normandy by car. Not very relaxing for everyone…
