What’s a podcast?

A podcast is a way to automatically deliver audio or video content to the end user.
The word automatically is key here, because it has always been very easy to go to the web and download sound files in the past. But with a podcast you use a piece of software that sits on your computer and “reads” the podcast “feed” on a regular basis (every week / day / hour) to search for new items. If new items are found, the program fetches the files on its own and signals you their availability. The only thing left for you to do is to listen to the file that is already waiting for you on your computer.
This also facilitates transferring new podcasts to your MP3 player or iPod so you can listen to them on the go.

There are many podcasts “readers” out there, but the one we recommend is iTunes, which you might already be familiar with. It also sports a large podcast library that will help you find many other interesting shows. That library is located in the iTunes Store section, and virtualy all podcasts will cost you exactly zero dollars and zero cents.
